Addressing the SMT CHIPS error: "Your browser does not support the Cookies Having Independent Partitioned State, CHIPS."
This issue arises when an Admin or Store Manager attempts to access the Site Management Tools on a SuiteCommerce (SC) or SuiteCommerce Advanced (SCA) website.
To utilize Site Management Tools effectively, it is essential to have the “SMT Core Content Bundle” installed and activated within the NetSuite environment.
In case you need a refresher on this procedure, here are two articles that detail installing and activating bundles in a NetSuite setting.
What Is CHIPS?
CHIPS (Cookies Having Independent Partitioned State) enables developers to control or restrict cookies from being shared across multiple sites via shared images, iframes, or other common site assets.
This article from Google Developers provides a more in-depth look at CHIPS and includes a five-minute YouTube video that explains the concept.
The CHIPS Error Message Displayed in SMT
An Admin or Store Manager can employ SMT to personalize their site and add CMS elements such as HTML, images, Featured Products, Logo Lists, Intelligent Recommendations, and more.
Typically, this is completed by pressing the “Esc” key on the SC or SCA site, entering the User’s NetSuite login information, and then dragging and dropping content onto the site.
The error occurs when the user attempts to access the SMT tools on the site and is prevented from using the Site Management Tools user interface.
Here’s an example of the precise wording of the error displayed:
Your browser does not support the Cookies Having Independent Partitioned State, CHIPS. For details about compatible browsers, see Supported Browsers. (link directs to this URL: https://docs.oracle.com/en/cloud/saas/netsuite/ns-online-help/chapter_4144431361.html#subsect_0701063757)
This CHIPS error arises when accessing the SMT User Interface.
Option 1: Use an Alternative Browser
Web Browsers that support the SMT Administrator User interface include Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge. If this error arises in any of these, your first step is to try a different browser to access the page.
Our team has found that using Chrome in Incognito mode can help bypass the CHIPS error.
Option 2: Turn Off Third-Party Cookies
To enter Incognito mode in Chrome, open any Chrome window.
Press Ctrl + Shift + N to open a new Incognito Window.
A disadvantage of this method is that you will need to re-enter your NetSuite login details. This can be tedious, but at least it allows access to your site.
Your second approach to resolving the CHIPS SMT error is to refer to your browser’s help documentation to disable third-party cookies in your particular browser.
Turning off third-party cookies may enable you to access the SMT tools; however, the potential impact on other functionalities such as chatbots or scripts that are currently operating on your site remains unclear.
Some chatbots or scripts might depend on third-party cookies for their functionality. Blocking these cookies may hinder access to these chat features.
Disabling third-party cookies could also affect features like Google ReCaptcha, which protects your site from spam attacks by bots.
In Google Chrome, to disable 3rd party Cookies, follow these steps:
Launch Chrome.
Click on More Settings in the upper-right corner.
Select Privacy and Security.
Click on Third Party Cookies.
Choose Block third-party cookies.
