PL-300 Exam Insights
Recently, I completed the PL-300 exam and became certified as a Power BI developer through Microsoft. I want to share my insights while the experience is still fresh in my mind. The most common question is: is this Microsoft Power BI exam beneficial? Ultimately, only you can determine this for yourself, but I will share my experiences to aid in your decision-making.
Is the Microsoft PL-300 exam suitable for newcomers?
Studying for the PL-300 exam will undoubtedly teach you something new, regardless of your background. With four years of Power BI experience, I discovered plenty of new information about the product. It’s important to note that Power BI has been available for eight years. While practical tasks may lead you to learn a few techniques that you repeatedly use, there's always more knowledge to gain. I believe taking this exam is a wonderful opportunity to enhance your understanding.
If you're new to Power BI and keen on expanding your knowledge, I wanted to clarify that you do not need four years of experience to achieve success in the exam. Microsoft has designed a beginner-friendly approach for studying this exam, offering comprehensive online articles, multiple-choice testing systems, and various online labs that include step-by-step guides with screenshots.

To see if you would gain new insights, I suggest doing a practice test that I will link in the description. It includes 50 multiple-choice questions covering four main areas of Power BI:
Power Query
Data Modelling
Power BI Service
Data Visualisation
Your results will indicate strengths and weaknesses, helping you identify where to focus your efforts. You can improve these areas by engaging with Microsoft’s official online learning resources for the PL-300 exam.
Microsoft organizes their content into learning paths. Each path contains modules, and every module is made up of several articles. Some pieces offer theoretical insights into how Power BI operates, while others are practical, guiding you on specific actions. Certain learning paths even include labs where you can interact with Power BI on a virtual desktop.
When preparing for the exam, I recommend this approach: first, take the practice test to identify focus areas. Then, study those areas, retake the practice test, and keep repeating the process. While you can access the learning paths for free, taking the actual exam does incur a fee. This cost varies by location; for instance, my fee was £150 in the UK, while a colleague in Lithuania paid 100 Euros.
What to expect in the Microsoft PL-300 exam?
Before your exam, you will receive a link from Microsoft directing you to the online examination portal. After logging in, you will need to activate your camera, show your ID, and provide a view of your surroundings. This protocol ensures that no one is providing assistance or that you do not have unauthorized notes present.
You must keep your camera on throughout the entire exam. I encountered a situation where I forgot to remove my headphones, and a representative from Microsoft informed me to take them off. This demonstrates their vigilance during the exam.
Once you pass, you'll receive a certified badge. I was surprised to discover that this badge requires renewal each year. If you want to retain it in the following year, you must retake the exam.
Do employers and clients value your badge?
During a call with a potential client, I mentioned my recent certification, and they indicated that it assured them I possessed the fundamental technical skills needed for their projects. This badge, indeed, signifies a minimum competence level. The rest depends on your portfolio and overall professionalism.
In summary, the PL-300 is currently the only official Power BI certification available and stands as the most credible certification on the market. If your aim is to enhance your technical credibility, pursuing this exam is certainly a worthwhile investment.
