How to Configure Customer Registration in SuiteCommerce

how to configure customer registration in suitecommerce

One of our clients recently asked us to adjust the customer login experience on their SuiteCommerce storefront. Their request? Enable guest checkout while still allowing current users to log in and give new users a straightforward way to register.

Thanks to SuiteCommerce’s built-in configuration settings, making these modifications can be done quickly - often in just a few steps - without any significant development. However, despite how simple the process is, clear guidance on the topic is surprisingly hard to find in NetSuite’s documentation.

In this article, we’ll walk you through each native customer registration option available in SuiteCommerce. By the end, you’ll understand how each setting works and how to configure the right customer login experience for your site.

Choosing the Right Customer Registration Flow

The process for changing your SuiteCommerce registration options is straightforward. Let’s walk through where to find the settings and how to update them:

Step 1: Navigate to your site configuration record in NetSuite: `Commerce > Websites > Website List`, then select the Shopping tab for your specific website.

Step 2: Scroll to the Registration section and locate the dropdown labeled Types of Customer Registration.

Step 3: From this dropdown menu, choose the customer registration experience that best suits your business needs, then save your changes to the Website Setup Record.

Tip: The “Field Help” description available when you click the field title is especially useful if you want additional information.

Step 4: After saving, issue a cache invalidation request and perform a hard refresh on your site (use Ctrl + Shift + R or your browser equivalent). The updated login settings should be reflected immediately on the live site.

Registration Types Available in SuiteCommerce

SuiteCommerce provides several default configurations for customer login and registration. Each option delivers a different end-user experience:

1. Required Registration Users must either log in or create an account to both browse and complete checkout. Neither guest checkout nor anonymous browsing is supported.

2. Optional Registration (Guest Checkout Enabled) On the login page, users may either enter an existing login or sign up as a new customer. At checkout, an additional option to complete a purchase as a guest is available. Users only need to enter their email, shipping, and payment information to complete the order - no registration required.

Checkout Display: Option to "Checkout as Guest."

3. Existing Customers Only. This version removes the "New Customer" sign-up link from the login page. Only users with existing accounts are allowed to log in.

Note: If you’ve installed supplemental bundles like the Advanced Sign Up Bundle or the Modern Sign Up Bundle, customers may still be redirected to a separate sign-up page. Versich can help implement or customize these features as needed.

4. Registration Disabled: Both login and registration options are removed entirely from the store interface. Customers proceed through checkout by simply providing their email and continued contact and payment details, without account creation.
