Background The Client Challenge

Our client is a global manufacturer of agricultural and heavy-duty machinery, with hundreds of equipment testing units validating the durability, performance, and safety of their machines across a wide range of operating conditions.

One of the company's key operational goals was to build a centralised, automated analytics platform for equipment testing. However, its existing setup relied entirely on manual data handling, which created serious limitations:

  • Testing results were stored across disconnected systems in varied formats CSV files, local spreadsheets, and legacy databases with no unified repository
  • Manual data collection and analysis led to delayed reporting and frequent human errors
  • No ability to compare test runs dynamically or drill into specific time intervals for root cause analysis
  • Inconsistent CSV file structures across different test types complicated data consolidation
  • No self service analytics capability for engineering and QA teams

The company chose Microsoft Power BI as their analytics and visualization platform and partnered with Versich bringing 10+ years of Power BI and data engineering expertise to lead the full implementation.

  • Audited all existing testing result files (CSV tables) to understand data structure, volume, and format variations
  • Identified structural differences across test types column counts, header row variations, and metadata fields
  • Defined a standardised database schema covering tests metadata, test results, and calculated metrics (e.g. averages and standard deviations)
  • Created setup file format templates reflecting the most frequent CSV structures to automate data distribution without manual mapping for every new test type
  • Assessed reusability of existing SQL queries and data structures in the target Azure architecture

  • Designed a robust three layer Azure based data architecture aligned to the client's existing Microsoft licences and built for future cloud scalability
  • Raw data ingestion layer Azure Blob Storage for landing CSV files from all testing systems, with an automated trigger queuing each new file for processing
  • Data processing and warehousing layer Azure SQL Database as the single source of truth, with an LTE (load-transform-extract) job checking for new files every five minutes
  • Business intelligence layer Power BI reports and self-service access via Excel and Power BI Desktop for engineering and QA teams
  • Analytics sandbox isolated environment for model development and custom analysis without impacting the live platform
