Background The Client Challenge

Our client helps manufacturers run their supply chains end to end sourcing, quality control, finishing, and shipment through a global network of suppliers and logistics partners spanning the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

The client had been tracking sales performance the only way its SAP ERP allowed: through the system's built-in reporting. That approach had run its course:

  • The ERP simply couldn't drill into sales by country, customer, or product the way the business needed
  • Sales data lived across more than ten regional databases spread over three continents, with no single place to see how the business was doing as a whole
  • Margin and sales figures sat in regional silos, so comparing performance across regions or against targets meant piecing things together manually
  • Manual reporting couldn't keep pace with how fast the business was moving

The client wanted a modern BI platform with automated data flows and dashboards built around how the business actually operates, and brought in Versich given the team's Azure and Power BI background to deliver it quickly.

Discovery and Architecture

  • Put together a small, focused delivery team spanning project management, business analysis, data engineering, and DevOps
  • Surveyed every regional database, the data flows feeding into them, and the gaps in the client's existing reporting
  • Gathered detailed sales analytics requirements covering every region the client operates in
  • Confirmed Azure as the right fit, building on the client's existing Microsoft footprint
  • Laid out an end-to-end architecture covering ingestion, storage, transformation, and reporting

Building the Pipeline

Building the Pipeline

  • Used Azure Data Factory to pull the relevant fields out of each regional database
  • Landed raw data in Azure Blob Storage, with each source database mapped to its own dedicated space for clean handling
  • Converted validated files into a more storage- and query-efficient format before further processing
  • Aggregated and loaded the processed data into Azure SQL Database, now the single place all sales reporting draws from

Reporting and Access

Reporting and Access

  • Built a sales view giving leadership a path from global totals down to an individual customer or product country, then customer, then product line
  • Built a separate margin view, letting account managers and leadership see profitability by customer, product, and responsible account manager
  • Gave both views full drill-down so users can go as granular as the question requires
  • Locked down access by region and role through Azure Active Directory, with row-level controls so nobody sees more than their role calls for
